I’ve been listening to Spotify for two years and it’s been killing my love for music. I listen to less interesting music, and my spectrum has shrunk. I am cut off from remixes, small artists, deep cuts, and anyone who uses uncleared samples. I have stopped making playlists since I know one day Spotify will end and all my work will vanish. If an artist stops paying for Distrokid or another distributor their music will evaporate from the site. I am only a renter in my own music taste. I hate this lack of ownership. Before this, I listened to my music through a massive chunk of MP3 files I have owned and maintained spanning 4 computers and over 17 years. It consists of 58 GB ( I have lost chunks of files in the past due to transfers) and 125 meticulously crafted playlists. If I want to know what music I listened to going to Cape Cod during middle school years I have a playlist for that. If I want to hear every song that has ever reminded me of a person I have a playlist for that. If I wanted to listen to the work music we used to blast in my college job I have a playlist for that. But iTunes no longer allows you to upload your own MP3s. There is no easy way to move 60GB of sound to a phone, and no apps that can handle playlist creation, or playback MP3s one after the other. Google Drive, VLC, Cloud Music, and Plex all come close but they are still unusable. So I turned to Spotify and all that it did was take music away from me. Now I listen to far less and I own nothing. 2 years of songs that have not been backed up. 2 years of songs that can all be gone in a second.
